結論からいうと, 現段階の私の力では何もできなさそうです.

現状の確認

色々やったので最初の状態の記憶が曖昧なのですが.

spicctrl
% apt-cache search vaio
i810switch - Enables/disables video output to CRT/LCD on i810 video hardware
kmilo - laptop special keys support for KDE
lphdisk - prepares hibernation partition for Phoenix NoteBIOS
motioneye - ppm/jpg snapshots or mjpeg compressed video on Vaio Laptops
sensors-applet - Display readings from hardware sensors in your Gnome panel
sjog - A program to use the "Jog Dial" on Sony Vaio Laptops
spicctrl - Sony Vaio controller program to set LCD backlight brightness
# apt-get install spicctrl


spicctrl で輝度調整ができるようです.
インストールして, 実行してみるのですが以下のように spicctrl の数値は変わりますが輝度が変わりません.

% spicctrl -b 100
% spicctrl -B
100


以下のような記事をみつけたのでこれと同じ現象かなぁとあきらめました.

# apt-get install powersave
# powersave -L

はい.

xbacklight

xbacklight というのもあるようなので試してみました.
ソースをひろってきて

% ./configure
checking for XRANDR... configure: error: The pkg-config script could not be found or is too old.  Make sure it 
is in your PATH or set the PKG_CONFIG environment variable to the full
path to pkg-config.
Alternatively, you may set the environment variables XRANDR_CFLAGS
and XRANDR_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config.

# apt-get install pkg-config
# apt-get install libxrandr-dev libxrender-dev
% ./configure

としましたが xrandr が 1.2 以上ないとだめらしくアウト.

sonypi

特に設定した記憶がないのですが

% dmesg |grep sony

カーネルのアップグレード*1

2.6.26.6 で spicctrl で調整できることを確認しました.
lenny を入れるほうが幸せになれるような気がしてきました.

結論

多分, X 7.3 までもっていかないとできないのでは？という感じです.
